Rachel Stern is a Berlin-based journalist and travel writer. A San Francisco native, she’s reported on topics ranging from Berlin’s “Silicon Allee” start-up scene to deaf rappers who perform through sign language.

She holds a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. One of the best pieces of advice she ever received about developing her own voice was from a professor at her university: “In order to be a better non-fiction writer, read a lot of fiction.”

Her mostly non-fiction pieces have appeared in publications such as Slate, Spiegel Online and The Huffington Post. She contributes to Mash Stories at crucial times.
